What is a Vietnam Temporary Residence Card?
A Vietnam Temporary Residence Card (TRC) is a document issued by the Vietnamese government that allows a foreign individual to live in the country for a set period of time. It eliminates the need to apply or renew visas every few months, making it convenient for long-term stays.
Here's some key information about the TRC:
- Validity: The TRC can be valid for anywhere between 1 to 3 years, but not exceeding the validity of your passport. You cannot apply for a TRC if your passport has less than a year remaining validity.
- Benefits: With a TRC, you can reside legally in Vietnam for the specified period. It also simplifies processes like opening a bank account, renting a property, or getting a job.
Who can apply for Vietnam Temporary Residence Card ?
A Vietnam Temporary Residence Card (TRC) is typically issued to foreigners who meet certain criteria. Eligibility depends on your visa type. Here's who can generally apply:
- Foreigners are members of diplomatic missions, consular offices, representative offices of international organizations of the UN, intergovernmental organizations in Vietnam, or the spouse, child under 18 years of age, housemaid that comes along during his/her term of office. In this case, he/she will be issued with a temporary residence card with symbol NG3.
- Foreigners have a visa of type LV1, LV2, ĐT, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LĐ or TT. In these cases, he/she will be issued a TRC with similar symbols in their visas.
- People with work permits: This is the most common scenario. Your work permit must be valid for at least 12 months at the time of application.
A compulsory condition for granting temporary residence card is a valid passport must be at least 13 months from the date of application.

How to get Vietnam Temporary Residence Card?
STEP 1: PREPARE ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Fill out the application form and gather all above required documents depending on your own case.
STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION TO THE VIETNAM IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT
Visit the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security, or the provincial Immigration Department where you reside.
Submit your completed application package along with the required fees.
STEP 3: COLLECT YOUR TRC
Processing times can vary, but it typically takes around 14 working days. Once approved, return to the Immigration Department to collect your TRC.
