Wifi-Sim Card

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional SIM card that's built directly into your phone instead of being a removable card. It allows you to connect to your carrier's network and use your mobile data plan just like a physical SIM card.

An eSIM can hold multiple eSIM profiles, but it’s advisable to have up to 3 eSIM profiles in one device. However, only 1 eSIM profile will be active at any given time.

There are two kinds of eSIM, which are:

  • Data eSIM, and
  • Voice, SMS, and Data eSIM.

Benefits of eSIM:

eSIMs offer several advantages over traditional plastic SIM cards:

    • Convenience:  Switching carriers or plans is a breeze with eSIMs. No need to wait for a new card in the mail or visit a store – you can do it all electronically from your phone.
    • Flexibility: Some eSIM-compatible devices can store profiles for multiple carriers, allowing you to easily switch between them. This is useful for travelers who want to avoid roaming charges, or for people who have a work number and a personal number.
    • Security:  Since eSIMs are embedded in the device, they're much harder to lose or steal compared to physical SIM cards. Even if your phone is lost, the eSIM profile can be remotely disabled to protect your data.
    • Space-saving:  eSIMs are tiny chips, freeing up valuable space inside your phone for other components. This is especially beneficial for sleeker phone designs.
    • Durability:  Physical SIM cards can be damaged if bent or scratched. eSIMs, being embedded within the device, are far less prone to such damage.
    • Future-proof:  eSIM technology is seen as the future of mobile connectivity, offering greater flexibility and potential for innovation in the way we use our devices.

Which devices support eSIM?

The number of devices that support eSIM is growing rapidly, but here are some of the most popular ones:

    • iPhones:  Starting with the iPhone XS series released in 2018, all new iPhones are compatible with eSIM. This includes the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and the latest iPhone 14 series.
    • Samsung Galaxy Phones:  Many Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM, including recent models like the Galaxy S22, S23, and S24 series, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip foldable phones.
    • Google Pixel Phones:  Starting with the Pixel 3 series, most Google Pixel phones are compatible with eSIM.
    • Other Android Phones:  A growing number of Android phone manufacturers are incorporating eSIM technology into their flagships and high-end models.  These include brands like OnePlus, Oppo, Motorola, and Sony.
